Job Summary: Reporting to the Director of the Center for Accessibility Resources & Disability Services, the Accommodations Coordinator is responsible for working with Barnard faculty to facilitate and coordinate student accommodations and services. The Coordinator provides students and faculty with support in identifying and implementing reasonable academic accommodations in compliance with federal guidelines and College policy and practices.
Job Description: - Consult with students, faculty, Deans of the College, staff members, and other stakeholders regarding academic success and potential barriers to learning. Serve as point of contact of faculty for a caseload of students.
- Assist faculty with implementation of and understanding of accommodations for each student and each course, in compliance with individual plans and ADA regulations.
- Conduct workshops for students and faculty. Will present to large audiences on behalf of the department as needed.
- Create programming efforts on campus to increase awareness of disabilities among students and staff to cultivate a campus climate of inclusion.
- Serve as point of contact for a caseload of students. Conduct intake meetings with students, semester check-in meetings, review documentation and implement appropriate reasonable accommodations.
- Provide academic coaching to students, as appropriate for students with disabilities who are struggling with managing their time, assignment prioritization, need to develop stronger study skills, and need assistance advocating for their accommodations directly with faculty.
- Initiate communication with faculty to discuss questions or concerns regarding the implementation of accommodations and provide guidance in determining reasonable accommodations.
- Provide ongoing training to faculty and will supplement as requested by the academic departments.
- Maintain current with peer institutions and engage in professional development to engage in best practices in providing disability services.
- Represent the Center for Accessibility Resources & Disability Services at College or university events to answer questions.
- Provide guidance and advisement to student organizations, administrators, faculty and others on concerns and issues related to students with special needs.
- Maintain frequent contact with students, staff, and faculty, as well as interaction with parents, as appropriate. Collaborate with university colleagues. Interact occasionally with external partners/agencies/service providers.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as needed.
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements: - Must be proficient and comfortable with use of computers / technology (data management systems; word processing, spreadsheet development, and electronic calendaring (Microsoft Office tools). Must be able to learn and adapt to office technology and data management system quickly and with minimal supervision.
- Familiarity with adaptive technology such as JAWS, speech to text software, text to speech software, alternative formats of books, as well as openness to learning and maintaining awareness of new technology and techniques.
- Ability to independently manage caseload, while working collaboratively within a team structure.
- Ability to adapt to the needs and goals of the office and attend to day to day operations as well as student crises that may arise regarding accommodations and complaints of discrimination or not being accommodated by faculty members.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including proper documentation and protection of sensitive information.
- Knowledge of ADA/504 compliance, with ongoing attention to compliance.
- Familiarity with current landscape of disability services on higher education campuses.
- Familiarity with ADA/Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Ability to evaluate students' needs to create a comprehensive accommodation plan that meets each student's unique needs based on their disability for a range of academic accommodations such as extended time, note-taking services, assistive technology, as well as accommodations for residential life and dining services.
- The ability to work extended evening and weekend hours as required several times per year for events and midterms/final exams.
- Minimum educational requirement of a Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, special education or similar program of study.
- Prior work experience (2-3 years) in student services, preferably with direct experience related to disability services and accommodations or a combination of work experience and educational background will be considered.
Salary Range: $65,000 - $70,000
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
