Assistant Professor of Practice

St. Edward's University, a nationally ranked, independent Catholic university and Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, specialized faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Chemistry, beginning August 2025. At St. Edward's University, specialized faculty are not tenure eligible but receive renewable contracts and have opportunities for promotion-in this case, to associate/full professor of practice. The successful candidate will foster student success in teaching lower-division chemistry courses, with the potential of coordinating General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry laboratory courses.

For consideration, candidates must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related area. Candidates should have demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching and a commitment to pedagogical innovation and implementing active learning in their courses. Prior teaching and curriculum design experience is encouraged.

Essential Responsibilities Include:

  • Teaching the equivalent of five 3-hour freshmen & sophomore level courses each semester, with possible course reductions for course coordination and other service responsibilities. Courses may include General Chemistry I and II lecture and laboratories, and Organic Chemistry I and II laboratories. Additional duties may include teaching Organic Chemistry I lecture and upper division courses in the candidate's expertise as needed.
  • Curricular coordination of the General or Organic chemistry laboratory two-semester sequence as needed. Coordination duties include curriculum development, assessment, preparation of laboratory manuals, and coordination of additional faculty teaching in this sequence.
  • Participation in departmental service, meetings, and duties as determined in consultation with the department chair.
  • Academic advising of chemistry majors as needed.
  • Participating in other school and department service activities, where appropriate
  • Opportunities to supervise undergraduate research may be available, according to the candidate's expertise and interest.
