Healthcare Staffing Professionals has an immediate need for a Laboratory Assistant to work at our clients office in San Diego, CA. The Laboratory Assistant (LA) may be allocated to laboratories performing work in the areas of agriculture, public health, veterinary medicine, and criminal and forensic investigation.
The position will start immediately upon acceptance and employment clearance and is initially a
90 day assignment with strong chance of extension.
Pay Rate-$40/hr working 40 hours a week

Essential Functions: 1. Performs all work following laboratory safety practices.
2. Assists criminalists, microbiologists, toxicologists, veterinary pathologists, entomologists, plant pathologists or other laboratory personnel in varied laboratory functions.
3. Prepares lab test kits, culture media, stains and reagents.
4. Fills tubes and bottles with specified solutions and applies identification labels.
5. Sets up, labels, and files microscope slides used for testing.
6. Uses a variety of computerized equipment, including a personal computer to enter and retrieve data.
7. Receives and prepares specimens for study and processing utilizing various methods and equipment.
8. Drives county vehicle to pick up and deliver specimens, supplies and other items.
9. Arranges specimens and samples on trays to be placed in incubators and refrigerators.
10. Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment, such as glassware, metal instruments, sinks, tables and test panels, using solvents, brushes, rags and autoclave.
11. May assist with animal autopsies and remove brain tissue from rabid animals.
12. May perform routine screening tests of urine and blood specimens by radioimmunoassay and enzyme immunoassay under supervision of a Toxicologist.
13. Collects and tests water and sewage samples, including standardized examinations of water, if legally qualified to do so.
14. Feeds and transfers tissue culture cells.

- Set up and maintain laboratory equipment

Education and/or Experience Education, training, and/or experience that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above. Qualifying education/experience:
1. One (1) year of work experience as a laboratory aide/assistant in a clinical, public health or veterinary laboratory performing the following tasks: collecting, inspecting, preparing, wrapping, distributing, washing, drying, and sterilizing laboratory glassware, instruments, syringes, and needles; operating autoclaves, ovens and glassware washers; and filing, labeling and distributing media and regents containers; OR,
2. Completion of at least one (1) year college level coursework which includes biology I/II, or chemistry I/II classes from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency and must have included laboratory classes.
