Wage Range Landscape Maintenance Specialist I: $22.44 - $28.47 per hour | $46,676.24 - $59,227.48 annually
Landscape Maintenance Specialist II: $25.27 - $32.07 per hour | $52,569.40 - $66,709.24 annually

The housing market is robust and offers a wide array of housing choices including new neighborhoods, houses with acreage, infill, and charming Victorian homes, with a median home price of about $634,500. Paso Robles also has excellent schools, both public and private. Approximately half an hour away is the nationally ranked Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, and within the city of Paso Robles is Cuesta College, North County Campus.
The Organization The City was incorporated in 1889 as a general law City that operates under the Council-Manager form of government with a general population of 30,907 as of January 1, 2024. The governing body consists of a five-member City Council and, beginning in 2020, the City is now divided into four voting districts, each district represented by one City Councilmember residing in that district; the Mayor's position remains at-large. The voters also elect one City Treasurer at-large. All six elected positions are non-partisan. The City Manager, appointed by the City Council, is the Chief Executive Officer, and is empowered to appoint all non-elected employees, except for the City Attorney.
The City has a total annual budget of $170 million for fiscal year 2024/2025, and a total of 304.4 FTEs across the departments of: Administrative Services, City Manager's Office, Community Development, Community Services, Fire and Emergency Services, Police, Public Works, and Utilities.
Typical Duties - Perform a variety of maintenance work on landscaped areas, maintaining lawns, shrubs, ground cover, trees, and other plant material on City property
- Perform preventative maintenance, trim, shape, cultivate, remove, and plant trees in the City right of way, in parks, or other City properties
- Plant, cultivate, trim, water, and spray ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, and flowers; prepare and treat soil for planting
- Maintain and repair irrigation systems; install and repair sprinkler heads, lateral and main lines, valves, controllers, drip lines, and bubblers; program irrigation controllers to efficiently irrigate landscapes
- Prepare and apply pesticides and herbicides to landscaped areas
- Assist in maintaining records of work performed
- Inspect, diagnose, and troubleshoot basic equipment
- As qualified and assigned, operate specialized equipment such as mowers, aerators, tractors, loaders, augers, chippers, stump grinders, aerial lift bucket trucks, chain saws, hedge trimmers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, dump trucks, dump trailers. and other related tree and landscape equipment
- Establish safe work zones and adhere to safe work practices including the use of personal protective equipment; setup work zones to ensure public safety as required
- Assist in safely diverting traffic and performing traffic control to gain access to parkways, medians, and rights of way
- Respond to emergency or special event requests
- Interact with the public to answer questions, explain applicable laws, rules, and regulations, and investigate complaints
- Perform other duties as assigned
Must be available for regular standby assignments (be ready to respond/arrive to calls for service within 30 minutes) and work emergency overtime as required and in accordance with existing . Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and with exposure to traffic, fumes, odors, dust and potentially hazardous chemicals and conditions.

- Best practices and principles of annual and periodic fertilization
- Operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and power equipment

- Basic record keeping and mathematics
Ability to: - Perform heavy labor
- Set up and operate a traffic area construction zone, including cones, barricades, and flagging as required
- Effectively interact with the public to answer questions, explain applicable laws, rules, and regulations, and investigate complaints
- Understand and follow oral and written directions
- Determine materials and supplies required for repair
- Skillfully and safely use tools and equipment related to the work
- Maintain accurate logs and basic written records of work performed
- Work independently or in a team situation and maintain effective working relationships
Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be equivalent to graduation from high school and:
Landscape Maintenance Specialist I: One year of construction, maintenance, or repair experience related to the assigned work.
Landscape Maintenance Specialist II: Three years of semi-skilled construction, maintenance, or repair experience related to the work assigned.
Spanish language skills are desirable.
Licenses and Certifications: Must possess a valid California Class C driver license and have a satisfactory driving record.
Requires the possession of or the ability to obtain a Class A California motor vehicle license with appropriate endorsements within one year of appointment.
Distinguishing Characteristics Maintenance Specialist I is the entry-level in this class series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn City facilities, use of tools and equipment, and a wide variety of practices and procedures. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining the knowledge, skills, and experience, and demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.
Maintenance Specialist II is the experienced journey level in this class series capable of performing a wide variety of work to ensure that the City facilities and infrastructure are maintained in a safe and effective working condition. Responsibilities include performing all operational and maintenance activities in the assigned area.
Advancement Criteria A Maintenance Specialist I who meets the criteria to advance to Maintenance Specialist II must have served a minimum of 6 months satisfactory performance at their current wage step prior to reclassification.

- Classic Tier 2 members participate in a formula of 2% at 60, with the employee paying a 7% member contribution, plus a 3% cost sharing contribution, for a total of 10%. An average of the 3 highest years is used for final compensation calculation.

Commercial License Incentive: Employees in eligible positions who hold a valid Class A or Class B California commercial driver license, maintain a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate, and are cleared by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse to drive commercial vehicles shall receive $100 per pay period, subject to department director approval
Retiree Health Reimbursement : Up to $500 per month reimbursement of health premiums until the age of 65 for employees who retire from the City with at least 20 years of service
