Lifeguard II: $18.15 - $21.78 Receives direct or general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May exercise technical and functional direction and provide training to other staff. Under direct or general supervision, Lifeguards provide aquatic safety, supervision, and instruction for the patrons including swim lessons and recreational swim.
This is an entry-level series in the Lifeguard Series within Parks and Community Services Department. Positions in this series typically have basic work-related experience and work under general supervision. The Lifeguard I is distinguished from the Lifeguard II in that the former usually performs duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.
Positions in this series are flexibly staffed. Positions at the II level can be filled by advancement from the I level after having 400 hours of experience as a certified lifeguard, or 200 hours of experience and possession of an instructor level certification, and after gaining the knowledge, skill, and experience which meet the qualifications for and after demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.
Typical Duties - Lifeguards, supervises and ensures patron safety at all times, including clearly and professionally conveying rules to patrons and enforcing facility regulations.
- Administers first aid and provides emergency care as required, maintains a safe aquatic environment and facility.
- Greets the public, responds to patrons' questions and inquiries.
- Assists with the Swim Lesson program.
- Keeps records and reports.
- Attends mandatory trainings and meetings.
- Assists senior staff and supervisors as directed.
- Follows the City and Parks and Community Services Department policies and procedures.
- Assists with cleaning and routine maintenance of the aquatic facility, including locker rooms, guard office, pool surfaces, and other facility-related duties as assigned.
- Presents and maintains a professional appearance and demeanor, including wearing appropriate uniform or attire for the position and exhibiting respect and enthusiasm as duties and responsibilities are carried out.
- Assists and teaches swim lessons.
- Facilitates recreation activities according to prepared curriculum.
- Provides feedback regarding program goals, objectives, and activity schedules to the public, participants or supervisors.
- Provides leadership for staff and volunteers and supervision for participants in program areas.
- Lifeguards the waterslide.
Lifeguard II, in addition to the above: - Assesses and tests swim lesson participants.
- Assists the Lead Pool Manager with the Junior Lifeguard and Start Guard Aquatic camps.
- Dispatches participants using the waterslide.
- Acts as a Lead Lifeguard during Recreation Swim.
- Conducts daily shift trainings.
- Acts as a Team Leader during All Staff trainings.
- Inspects equipment, waterslide, and play structure.
- Conducts internal audits.
- Ensures swim lesson report cards are completed correctly and on time.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities K nowledge of: Basic safety precautions and procedures related to recreation programs and facilities. Knowledge of philosophy, objectives and requirements in the implementation of municipal aquatics programs. Knowledge and command of all of the latest safety standards and information related to aquatics. Professional work habits including reliability, dependability, creativity, and demonstration of enthusiasm for the job. Techniques for effectively dealing with individuals of various ages, various socio-economic and ethnic groups, and effectively representing the City in contacts with the public. Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
A bility to: Conduct one's self in a professional manner. Function effectively under direct supervision and to develop effective working relationships with fellow City employees and the public. Effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Receive direction and to follow oral and written instructions. Handle multiple tasks. Swim, tread water, perform rescues involving the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force to move objects, and to perform retrieval of heavy items from 14' depth. Sit and stand for long periods of time. Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and with exposure to pool chemicals. Read written materials and computer screens, and communicate in person. Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing. Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Minimum Qualifications E ducation and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Lifeguard I: - Must be a minimum of 15 years old and undergo appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting including documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years.
Lifeguard II: - Must be a minimum of 16 years old with at least 400 hours of experience as a certified lifeguard or 200 hours of experience and possession of an instructor level certification or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
- Undergo appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting including documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years.
