Job Title: Distribution & Logistics Leader

Work Location: Parsippany, NJ preferred. May also consider candidates located in Cincinnati, Ohio or Northlake, IL. This is a remote work role, with reporting to the office 1-2 days per month.

Travel Requirements: Less than 10%

 

Under the general supervision of the North America Logistics Procurement Leader, the role owns, leads, manages, and directs transportation activities for the North American Businesses. This includes transportation and warehousing and specifically planning, optimization, execution, measurement, and carrier and third-party logistics providers (3PL’s) performance reviews. The incumbent will provide leadership and direction with full accountability for all transportation solutions. Understanding the delivery creation process, approach, and standard operating procedures (SOP’s), is important to drive standardization, automation, and a consistent, reliable transportation process.

 

This position is responsible for achieving specific goals and successfully implementing the Annual Operating Plan (AOP). The incumbent will be tasked with setting ambitious targets to deliver exceptional customer satisfaction while optimizing overall costs. This includes reducing inbound and outbound transportation expenses and minimizing transfers between facilities.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

  • TRANSPORTATION: Conduct freight optimization for both inbound and outbound transportation, determine best mode for shipping based on lanes and service level requirements, and Using data, determine best alternatives to reduce costs while improving service levels. Conduct regular meetings with carriers to review performance. Determine applicable transportation metrics and understand root cause on why changes may occur. Identify and share Best Practices among sites to improve distribution performance and reduce distribution costs.

 

  • 3PL: Conduct regular business meetings (quarterly) with Third Party Logistics (3PL) providers. Drive productivity through data analysis, process reviews, and action plans. Determine applicable key metrics and understand root causes, correctives actions and business impacts. Communicate internally and drive changes with the sites and 3PLs. Implement Best Practices to support inventory reduction and minimize waste streams. Evaluate best ways to flow product including slotting, golden zones, bin locations, etc. Manage customer return and complaint resolution process. Manage the cycle counting process and inventory management at the sites. 

 

  • TRANSPORTATION PROCESS & SYSTEMS: Collaborate with other SBU’s and Supply Leaders on Best Practices to leverage including logistics models, TMS solutions Lean Logistics ideas, etc. Collaborate with the transportation procurement team to negotiate optimal logistics solutions and develop 3PL operating models. Align distribution models with customer service level agreements (SLAs) and implement processes to bridge any gaps and ensure SLA attainment. Work with Customs Compliance Team to ensure all import and export shipment activity is compliant with regulations. Drive the best TMS solution and roll out across all applicable Sun Chemical locations. Work directly with Commercial, Customer Service and Procurement Customers to drive improved logistics models including order patterns and ship cycles.

 

  • KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS: 3PL KPI’s include OTIF (On Time and In Full shipments to the Customer), Total cost management of freight and warehousing activities (Distribution Costs), Warehouse and Transportation metrics such as productivity (pounds shipped per manhour), cost per shipment, touches, order sizes and impacts to warehouse operations, damage, complaints, etc., Freight metrics such as freight spend for product shipped by site, transfers, mode percentage by site, order size impact to freight costs, number of deliveries per site, preferred ship site metrics, etc.

 

  • PEOPLE & ORGANIZATION: Work closely with the Supply Chain team to have the optimal service model possible. Collaborate with other Business Functions. Influencing and managing with data skills are needed to be successful in this role. Instilling a culture of excellence and continuous, sustainable improvement in productivity, fixed costs, and operating margins.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Minimum 5 years of proven experience in Logistics and /or Supply Chain with growing responsibility and high customer focus.
  • Minimum of a BS degree in Supply Chain, Manufacturing Management, Business, or a related field; MBA or related advanced degree preferred such as APICS certification.
  • SAP Systems experience (PTF/PTD) – TMS, APO, SNP, MRP, DRP, WM, etc.
  • Experience with 5S, Six Sigma, and Lean Logistics is preferred.
  • Strong change management, collaboration, leadership, verbal, and written communication skills. 
  • Strong quantitative data mining and analytical skills required in Excel (and SAP data preferred).
  • Develop presentations that facilitate the decision-making process and drive action with project plan.
  • Knowledge of transportation modes, 3PLs, distribution networks, warehousing strategy, and Best Practices.
