General Definition of Work Performs intermediate skilled human support work performing medical evaluations of inmates housed in the County jail, assisting physicians, collecting medical data, preparing and maintaining files and records, preparing and dispensing medications, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Registered Nurse or as assigned.

Essential Functions Screens and assesses inmate health; performs intake exams for new arrivals; prepares medical histories; responds to questions and medical requests from inmates.
Administers medication to inmates; discusses inmate's condition with physician; confers with health care agencies, dentists and other agencies involved in prescribing medications for inmates.
Assists Jail physician with general health assessments and sick calls for inmates; orders, draws, and reviews blood tests, x-rays, and lab results; communicates with physician concerning abnormal values and results; communicates standard results with inmates.
Coordinates with Jail physician for diagnosis and care plan; provides appropriate medical treatment as implemented by the physician.
Reviews daily medical requests to assess immediate and routine care; schedules and coordinates inmate appointments with dentist, counselor, nurse practitioner, physician, or psychiatrist.
Obtains, reviews, and maintains inmate medical records; prepares and maintains patient charts; prepares medical records for transferred and discharged inmates.
Administers annual tuberculous screening, flu, and vaccination clinics for inmates and staff.
Orders medical supplies; maintains inventory.
Reviews inmate grievances and refers them to appropriate staff for proper disposition.
Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Thorough knowledge of the principles, standards, practices, and techniques of nursing/emergency medical services; thorough knowledge of the dangers inherent in and the precautions to be taken in the use of narcotics and other medications; thorough knowledge of the treatment, diagnostic, immunization, and related medical services for medically ill patients; thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures, and policies pertaining to nursing services of the detention facility; ability to accurately maintain patient medical records and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, associates, and the general public.
Education And Experience Associates/Technical degree with coursework in practical nursing or emergency medical services, or related field and moderate experience in emergency and practical nursing care, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Special Requirements Possession of current license as a Practical Nurse or an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic in the State of Georgia.
First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certifications upon hire.
May require additional safety training or certifications.
Favorable background history as determined by review of local, State, and Federal records.
