Description

Salary is Non-Negotiable. The successful candidate will be hired at the minimum salary.  NEW SALARY: $89,513.52 (annual salary of $80,632.44 plus Competitive Area Differential pay of $740.09 per month).

 

The essential function of this position is to supervise the operations of the Court Interpreter Department. Key responsibilities include supervising staff, scheduling, training, and overseeing interpreting and translating assignments; managing budgets; and performing related administrative tasks. The role operates independently, with major activities reported through periodic meetings.

This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work/onsite schedule after a 90-day period, as outlined by existing Circuit policies and procedures. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Supervises staff, including recruiting, selecting or recommending selection, training, scheduling, assigning and evaluating work, counseling, disciplining, and recommending termination.
  • Provides oral interpretation between English and a foreign language, and vice versa, including the oral interpretation of written text.
  • Establishes operational goals, and standards, formulating policies to ensure compliance. 
  • Coordinates daily interpreting and translation services; oversees staff interpreters and independent contractors; and contributes to contractor contract development.
  • Ensures interpreter compliance with organizational policies, identifies program needs, and implements adjustments as required.
  • Oversees expenditures, reviews and approves division related budgets, processes contractor invoices and provides fiscal data for annual budget preparation.
  • Performs administrative tasks such as data collection for statistical reports, translation of court-related documents, and completion of periodic employee performance evaluations.
  • Compiles information for surveys and special reports documenting responsibilities.
  • Maintains personnel records, interviews prospective contract interpreters/translators and evaluates their qualifications.
  • Stays current with relevant vocabulary and cultural knowledge across legal, medical and other specialized areas.
  • Conducts employee orientation, participates in committees and workgroups, exchanges information at meetings, and attends professional development workshops or seminars.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication with the Judiciary, Court Administration, Clerk of the Court, State Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, and the public.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.

 

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in English, source language, social science, public administration, public affairs, criminal justice, sociology, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of related experience, including two years of managerial/supervisory experience.
  • Certified Court Interpreter by the Court Interpreter Certification and Regulation Program (CICRP) of the Office of the State Courts Administrator (OSCA), Florida State Courts System and experience as an interpreter.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

 

  • Knowledge of specialized vocabulary used in the judicial environment.
  • Knowledge of various judicial proceedings, including arraignments, plea bargains, motions, and probation violation hearings and sentencings.
  • Working knowledge of laws, court rules, procedures, policies, legal documents, and legal factors pertaining to the assigned court.
  • Knowledge of the organization, operation, function, and jurisdiction of the assigned court.
  • Knowledge of the calendaring procedures and modern case management techniques within the assigned court.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, orally and through presentations.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to accurately maintain complex records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the judiciary members, court administration personnel, and staff from other private and public agencies.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to recognize and prioritize work tasks.
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with integrity and confidentiality.
  • Ability to interact courteously, tactfully, and patiently with the public, especially individuals under stress.
  • Ability to translate and interpret fluently between English and other languages, including required Spanish, in spoken, written or recorded form, with proficiency in slang, vulgarities and common idioms.
  • Ability to direct professional-level staff in a way that promotes full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to mentor others by advising, counseling, or guiding them on issues that may be resolved using professional principles.
  • Ability to operate dictation machines and video/audio recording devices.
  • Computer literacy, with proficiency in using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and communication.

Physical Demands:

  • Work involves a significant amount of standing, walking, sitting, talking and listening; must be able to transfer up to 10 pounds.

 

Licenses Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License; required to be a Certified Court Interpreter by the Court Interpreter Certification and Regulation Program (CICRP) of the Office of the State Courts Administrator (OSCA), Florida State Courts System; Biennial Renewal and Continuing Interpreter Education (CIE) Compliance Requirement.
