Job Description

This is a hybrid position, with 60% of time spent either in Fairfax or Warrenton, VA. A TOP SECRET clearance is required.

Spire is a full-service communications firm supporting innovative programs in government, technology, healthcare, and science. Spire is looking to add a senior-level technical writer to support the Secretary of the Air Force, Concepts Development and Management (SAF/CDM).

You will bring your natural curiosity/ability to learn new tech to draft content in the areas of cybersecurity, cloud architecture, and a variety of other technical topics. You will contribute to developing technical documentation for a diverse range of projects, including government services contracts, innovative technology solutions, and advanced R&D initiatives.

You will be responsible for development and curation of technical content leveraging information gathered through multiple methods (interviews, research, legacy review) and turning that information into compelling and technical documentation.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on cutting-edge programs that enhance mission readiness and national security.

What you’ll do

  • You will work closely with engineers, product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to gather technical information, clarify requirements, and ensure documentation aligns with both product/solution features and client needs.
  • Create and maintain documentation, including developing and updating user manuals, technical guides, API documentation, knowledge base articles, release notes, and R&D technical reports. Ensure clarity, accuracy, and accessibility.
  • Simplify complex concepts by translating advanced technical processes, systems, and software features into clear, user-friendly content for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Conduct research to stay informed about CDM’s technology capabilities, project requirements, and industry trends.
  • Proofread and edit documentation produced by other team members or departments, ensuring consistency, quality, and adherence to Air Force style guides.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple documentation projects, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality materials across services and technology domains.
  • Continuously assess documentation usability, incorporating user feedback and ensuring content is easy to navigate, search, and understand.

What you’ll bring to Spire

  • 7+ years of experience in technical writing, preferably within government contracting or defense, aerospace, or cybersecurity sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience creating technical documentation for government clients, including user manuals, system specifications, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and compliance documentation, is highly preferred.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of technical concepts related to IT systems, software, security protocols, and regulatory compliance standards (e.g., NIST, DFARS, ITAR). Familiarity with the technical language, specifications, and methodologies commonly used in federal contracts is a plus.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skill, with a focus on clarity, accuracy, and adherence to government-specific documentation standards.
  • Ability to translate complex technical information into clear, concise, and user-friendly content suitable for both government and contractor stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with documentation tools commonly used in government contracting, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SharePoint, and Confluence.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with proven ability to collaborate effectively with government officials, contractors, and internal teams.

If you meet the qualifications above, please submit your resume for consideration.
