The Food Safety & Quality Assurance Manager oversees all quality assurance activities in the food processing industry and reports directly to the QA Director. They handle daily communication of food safety and quality concerns with the plant team, act as a regulatory contact for the company, and manage technical customer inquiries and complaints. Additionally, they lead the QA team in identifying and resolving quality issues with operations

Job responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Train and evaluate QA staff on performance and organizational needs, coordinate activities with Plant Sanitation.
  • Initiate GMP audits of plants and surrounding areas.
  • Participate in third-party audits (SQF, government agencies such as FDA/USDA, and certifications like Organic, Non-GMO, Kosher, Vegan, etc.).
  • Ensure regulatory compliance, vendor approval, and inspection of raw materials.
  • Communicate with external laboratories, suppliers, and customers regarding quality issues.
  • Review and give feedback on updated quality procedures, policies, and work instructions.
    Review the HACCP program and perform annual reassessments.
  • Resolve food safety and quality issues reported by QA supervisors and specialists.
  • Inform the organization about new technologies, ingredients, and processing equipment that can enhance our competitive edge.
  • Design and initiate test methods and programs to support new analytical initiatives.
  • Communicate with Customer QA and USDA inspectors regarding directives and new agency policies.
  • Establish new policies, procedures, or work instructions for products and operations developed within the organization.
  • Participate in product evaluations in the Product Development kitchen.
  • Monitor the disposition of products on quality hold with the plant team. (Hold/Release program)
  • Review third-party pest control programs.
  • SQF Practitioner.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry or related are from an accredited four year-college or university preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in quality assurance, control, food safety audits, or operations in a food processing environment preferred.
  • Formal training in GMP’s, HACCP concepts, and USDA/FDA regulations is preferred.
  • Must have strong knowledge of food safety principles, sanitation, and understanding of food microbiology, laboratory testing procedures, Data Trace temperature measurement system or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of computer skills Microsoft Excel, Word and other database performance abilities.
  • Quick to be familiarized with all responsibilities of the QA/QC Technicians and Leads for all stations (production, packaging, sauce).
  • Must be a team player with great detailed and analytical skills and willingness to learn new tasks.
  • Willingness to travel (up to 10%) and work flexible hours.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
